Are you really that organised?
A few weeks ago, someone approached me with a question that struck a chord: "Are you really that organised, or do you just write about it?" It's a valid question, and my response, diplomatically put, is that it depends. If you're expecting my home to grace the cover of Better Homes any day of the week, I hate to disappoint you. You see, my household consists of two busy adults with demanding jobs and teenagers who, well, create mess and clutter wherever they go.
I can however confidently say yes, I am genuinely organised if your definition of organisation includes a practice of managing things. This involves regular cleanup and declutter sessions for every nook and cranny in the house. I religiously maintain my calendar, adhere to routines not so much daily routines as I will create a revolt to the rules I have set for myself but I am very strong on yearly and seasonal routines.
The essence of organisation
Organising as I've come to understand it, isn't about gracing the cover of a home magazine; it's a skill that can be learned and a discipline that can be practiced. Knowing how organising works doesn't mean maintaining perfection every second of every day, but rather having the skills to keep things looking and feeling good for you most of the time. In the event that chaos ensues, like it does in everyone’s live from time to you. Being able to declutter and organise means you possess the ability to quickly restore order. The discipline lies in daily, weekly and yearly actions that instil a sense of organisation and support in accomplishing tasks that are important in your life.
The need for an organised and decluttered space, varies from person to person. What works for one may not work for another. However, one universal truth prevails: learning and practicing organisation regularly, makes life considerably easier, and things, in general, tend to be more... organised!
Your organising journey
Understanding the nuances of organisation and making it a part of your routine is transformative. It's not just about appearances; it's about creating an environment where you can thrive amidst the demands of a busy life. So, whether your definition of an organised home aligns with a pristine magazine cover, or you feel organised through a well-managed daily routine, the journey towards a more organised life begins with learning to declutter and organise and practice regularly.
