Declutter, clean and organise before the bugs arrive

They fly, run or buzz. Have you seen some of the creepy crawlies yet? I have, it is that time of year. How does this relate to organising? Well, it is good to prepare now to declutter, clean and organise, before we have a whole extensive family gathering of bugs in the kitchen, the roof, or a cupboard.

Let’s break it down into two different bugs; moths and cockroaches. Moths are pretty easy, you need to keep in mind to shake your clothes extra carefully, prior to folding and bringing them in. I keep a small container and a piece of paper ready to catch them. It saves running through the house chasing them without the “right equipment”.

Take action early

In regards to roaches, this needs some serious thought and work. I was exposed to a severe infestation several years ago and it isn’t pretty. On the positive side, it helped declutter very quickly, because almost everything had to be removed from that house. For most of us, however, the problem is minor. And there are several things we can we do in regard to this common problem amongst Aussie households.

  • We can get a professional in to spray, if we have a big place with lots of nooks and crannies – they really know what they are doing, so for some of us this is a must.

  • For the DIY’s, we can bomb some spots ourselves, change those baits and we can organize our spaces very well, so we can spot easily if there is a problem and were.

A relatively unknown trick is that we can put talcum powder in some or our spaces, this is one of the simple things that will make them perish.

Once our spaces are organised, it is also very important to remove all crumbs and to keep all our foods sealed. We need to be a bit more diligent this time of year, especially in the kitchen. Remember if you see one, you most likely have 10 or 20 creepy crawlies you don’t see.

Be vigilant now, declutter, clean and enjoy a(n almost) bug free summer later.

True story

My journey into organising started with creepie crawlies many years ago. I talk about it in both “Organising Unpacked” and “How to Organise your Home and Paperwork”.
