Revolutionising digital Receipt Management
I have written about budgeting a couple of times here and there. Today, let's shift our focus to the often-overlooked necessity of financial management – receipts. Thanks to technological marvels, entering receipts is no longer a cumbersome task. With a simple photo and a couple of taps on your phone, you can input your receipts and dispose of the paper clutter immediately.
Super simple digital receipt management
For those needing to keep receipts for warranties, a dedicated online folder e.g. Tax 2022_2023 is all you need.
You then simple name your receipt according to date_shop_purchase and amount.
It would look like: 2023_Officeworks_office_Chair_Tax_$350
Once I have gone through the trouble of saving the receipt in the right location with the right name I am ready come tax time (and very grateful to my past self I put in the effort, and so is my accountant).
If you want to go higher tech than making a photo and naming it accordingly on a folder in your (cloud-based) data management system you can also download an app from the ATO to keep all your tax receipts together. All your accountant needs to do is access your file.
The catch with the ATO app is that if you purchase something else like a car or a lounge set you still need a system like described above.
More sophisticated digital receipt management - What about business owners drowning in receipts?
Here's the game-changer for business owners drowning in a sea of receipts for tax purposes – mobile apps that accept pictures of receipts. These apps seamlessly send your receipt data to an online service that converts it into usable data for your company's budget and expense columns. Say goodbye to faded receipts and the tedious task of sorting through a hundred papers during tax time. You don’t even have to name the receipt like above because the system will do it for you. The system often also picks up the name and amount with all that is left for you is to add the purpose/expense column and approve it.
Examples of digital receipt management apps.
There are a few and by the time I finish writing there’ll be a few new ones emerging (do let me know in the comments if you have been using some).
Dext previously Receipt bank – this works well with Xero business budgeting and MYOB
Hubdoc – a newer app that also works well with Xero business budgeting and MYOB
Need a little joy when you are working on your digital receipt management - Embrace the Sound of Progress
As I often say it is unlikely you’ll wake up excited to do your receipts but if you set yourself a task with a cuppa or make it a habit, things become a lot easier overtime.
The synergy between technology and budgeting is a game-changer for everyone, even those who were once hesitant to embrace the budgeting journey. With receipts and business budgeting tools working harmoniously, life becomes not only organised but significantly less stressful.
So, consider the convenience and peace of mind that technology brings to your financial life. Embrace progress and take the leap into a future where managing your receipts is as easy as the tapping your finger on a screen. Don't miss out on the ease and efficiency that technology offers in transforming your financial world.
