Embracing Culture: Gezellig, Hygge, and the Art of Organising for Cosiness

Culture, an intricate tapestry of traditions, customs, and values, is often overlooked in discussions about organisation. Surprisingly, our cultural background significantly influences our day-to-day lives. As a member of the "invisible migrants," a term affectionately used for the Dutch, my cultural heritage emphasizes the importance of living spaces. For the Dutch, there's a word that encapsulates this sentiment – gezellig. While its English translation is "cosy," gezellig encompasses more than mere comfort; it's a term that permeates every aspect of life, from homes and afternoons to dinners and conversations. This cultural emphasis on gezellig, akin to a modern-day religion for the Dutch, underscores their commitment to creating inviting, comfortable living spaces and lives.

The Dutch Approach to Gezellig

Gezellig is a versatile concept for the Dutch, extending far beyond the English confines of "cosy." It represents a philosophy that encourages individuals to infuse warmth and comfort into every facet of their lives. For the Dutch, making something gezellig is an art – a meticulous process of tweaking, changing, and setting up living spaces to ensure a profound sense of comfort the moment they step through the door.

Applying Gezellig Beyond Dutch Borders

So, what can we learn from the Dutch approach of aiming for a gezellig house and how can we integrate this concept into our own lives? Taking a moment to evaluate our surroundings and asking questions like, "How can I make this space cosy and comfortable?" opens the door to a myriad of possibilities. Unlike a rigid set of rules, this approach allows for personalization and creativity. Consider the simple addition of a new lamp, a scented candle, an artwork, or a plant – these are choices only you can make, tailoring your space to reflect your unique preferences.

Preparing for the Festive Season

With the festive season, especially Christmas, just around the corner, those of us with a more Anglicized background tend to embrace the spirit of decoration. Integrating the Dutch practice of gezellig into our preparations can be incredibly valuable. Before adorning our spaces with holiday cheer, taking the time to ask ourselves how we can make our homes warm, inviting, and gezellig can transform the holiday experience.

Hygge - A Scandinavian Cousin of Gezellig

While the Dutch revel in gezellig, our Scandinavian counterparts have their own equivalent – hygge. Similar to gezellig, hygge encapsulates the essence of cosiness, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Exploring the parallels between these cultural concepts can provide further insights into the universal desire for comfort and warmth.

Hygge

In the pursuit of a more organised and inviting living space, embracing cultural concepts like gezellig and hygge can offer valuable guidance. Taking the time to assess our surroundings and infusing our spaces with personal touches can transform our homes into havens of comfort. As the holiday season approaches, let us draw inspiration from the Dutch commitment to gezellig and the Scandinavian embrace of hygge, creating spaces that reflect our unique cultural influences and fostering a sense of warmth and togetherness.

The most “gezellig” book

It makes no sense in English but books can be cosy (in other languages). Anyway, if you want to feel cosy, this is the book for you.
