5-step process on how to declutter your wardrobe
Once you have decluttered the whole wardrobe!
4. Ask yourself, why am I disposing of these clothes?
Have you worn them to death? Are there items you loved and used but that are at the end of their life? Are there some things you haven't worn for a long time or that don’t make you feel comfortable anymore? These are all valid reasons to dispose of your clothing.
In the video below on how to declutter your wardrobe, I show you all the items that are going; they will be placed in two bags, one for the second-hand shop and one for the bin.
Having a good think or analysis at this stage of learning how to declutter your wardrobe.
A pause can be very useful because it raises awareness in terms of:
· What am I throwing away?
· Why do I want to throw or give it away?
Answering these questions when you declutter your wardrobe will help you with future purchases, as you will know the brands that you like, the pieces of clothing that last, and those that you tend to dispose of way too soon.
Note: If there is any guilt with items you purchased and you realise that these were “wrong buys”, I encourage you to simply acknowledge this. Make a mental note of why they weren’t good purchases, but move on while you forgive yourself. After this, I encourage you to move away from any feelings of guilt you might have. We have all made wrong purchases in the past and continue to do so; however, if we pause and reflect, we learn from it and reduce the number of “bad buys” for the future.
Once your feelings are acknowledged dispose of the item which is literally making space so you can make better, more informed decisions for the future. The easiest way to dispose of clothes is the secondhand shop if the clothes are in good nick. Otherwise the bin or a place that collects clothes/clothing material will work, H&M are the most proactive company to accept old clothing.
Declutter your Wardrobe – Final step - Check what is left
Before we wrap up, make sure you still have some clothes. The last time I decluttered my wardrobe, I had a small pile of pyjamas, which I kept aside. I want to get rid of them, but I don't have any replacement, so you have to be a little bit mindful when decluttering that you still have clothes to wear.
Generally, you check what is left in your wardrobe at the end of the wardrobe decluttering process. In this case, I have very few pieces left, but everything in there is comfortable, and I like it. It also helps me see what I genuinely need to shop for (which will make my purchases more focused, faster, more efficient and less costly).
My aim was to start building a capsule wardrobe. I can now go to the shops and will only buy items that will really build up my wardrobe in this next stage of life.
Great times during the year to Declutter Your Wardrobe
I find the best times to declutter your wardrobe is the end of the season for adults or at a time when I feel like I want to go and buy a few key pieces of new clothing. For children the best time for some wardrobe decluttering often coincides with the school holidays.
For years, we would start the summer and winter holidays with “Mama, what will we do in the holidays?” “Well, first we will declutter your wardrobe, and in the second week we will buy you some new clothes”. This activity was often paired with a nice outing to the shops with lunch and a hot chocolate it allowed me to stay on top of the kids’s clothes whilst making it a fun activity.
Generally speaking, my wardrobe is decluttered, but as with most decluttering and organising areas, organising is a journey, and decluttering will need to be done regularly. The first time you do this, it will be challenging. If you keep it up twice a year, it will be a breeze moving forward.
