What did mum teach you about organising?
Seeing it has just been mother’s day it got me thinking about my mum, what she has done for me and what she has taught me.
Of course, she has done a lot like any mother has but specifically in regards to organising I can honestly say she is my inspiration. Her days were sprinkled with little (Dutch) sayings; “let’s find a spot for this, I need to do a bit of a dust or a small vacuum, things are fresh and clean now”. “We can hit the road for a couple of days now” (this is after giving the bathroom a good clean).
She used to follow a cleaning routine in two-week cycles and made sure she did something fun after or in the middle of a tidy-up or cleaning session. I have fond memories of her sitting with her feet up, reading a book, and drinking her beloved coffee whilst waiting for the floor to dry around her. If that failed she would mop herself out of the house to the front door and go for a walk with the dog. Cleaning and tidying was an accepted part of the week for her (and is for my dad now seeing he has taken over the domestic chores from her). Spaces weren’t perfect in our house, but overall, they were lived in, cleaned, and comfortable something I still strive for today.
Maybe you like to take a trip down memory lane this week as well.
What did your mum teach you about being organised?
It doesn’t have to necessarily be an answer covered in opinion it is more an open question what worked and what didn’t and why?
What will work for me now I am plotting my own course in life?
And lastly, this is the real scary question.
What are you teaching your children in regard to organising, cleaning, decluttering and keeping your spaces tidy?
Because, you are the one in charge now.
