Contemplating purpose. What is the point of cleaning, organising and decluttering?
This week I am contemplating purpose. What is the point of cleaning, organising and decluttering? After all - it will never stop, will it?
The answer is, probably no. Because as long as we are living, we are participating in life’s events and activities, things will come into our lives and we will have to let other items go. It is however worthwhile to check for purpose, why are you doing all this in the first place?
Purpose provides a bigger picture
When learning anything new, I think it is important to see the bigger picture, to see why we are doing things before we focus on some of the more mundane tasks. This can link very well with getting organised. My purpose for never stopping to work on organising is simple: I feel calmer, I can think clearer and I feel a sense of success and achievement, all simply by having clear spaces. This means, I can happily pick up the shoes in the living room, do the Ironing or search for perfect boxes to fit in a drawer. I do these simple tasks because they actually bring me a sense of peace and a feeling of being successful.
Prioritise
The other thing you can ask yourself once you got to your reason is; what is the most important thing to get done first? For me surfaces and the floor cleaned and cleared give me an instant buzz, followed by having all the laundry done. Don't mistake all this for perfection, my floor is not always clean and I sometimes do fall behind with the washing. When I do have the time, my clear reason of why I want an organised space comes to the fore front and propels me into action.
This week find your reason for wanting to be organised.
How will it make you feel? Once you figured this out, all you have to do is prioritise your tasks and try to get that feeling as often as possible.
Looking back over a decade
I stumbled upon organising through a myriad of life events, since then Decluttering and Organising have been my steady companions. My life and home aren’t perfect but they are much better because I Declutter and Organise.
