What are Professional Organisers?
As I write article after, article on organising what a better way to explore this topic than by explaining what a professional organiser is and what they do.
Professional Organisers are still a very new profession and a relatively rare breed in Australia. In America we are however a rapidly growing profession and better known as Professional Organizers. How did we come about? It is a reaction to a society where we all live very busy lives. Most of us have sufficient money to get bye, and some (of course we would argue that we really needed our latest purchase).
We live in a consumerist society which is neither; good or inheritably bad, it just is. Combine consumerism or (easy to come by) stuff with a lack of time, and often a lack of skills. It results in a problem for many individuals. The statement; ‘I am so unorganised’ is not uncommon when talking to our friends or colleagues. This trend in society has in turn created the opportunity for a new profession to evolve, specialising in helping people get a handle on the stuff in their lives.
In regards to skills when trying to get organised, it is hard for the average person to know how to break down a messy area or a chaotic household. And we are not to blame, who thought us to organise ourselves, our homes and our work spaces? Probably, not many people, neither is it a subject at school. Maybe some of our parents or teachers might have shown us the way, if they were naturally talented in this area. Most of us however, could do with some help and some techniques in regards to the overall skill set of organising. And that is what organising is; a skill that can be thought and a skill that needs to be practised.
Organising is often associated with decluttering which is one part of what we do as professional organisers. After we declutter we re-organize areas, which means that we work with the items left that our clients wants to and needs to keep. We then we create a system to use these items very efficiently to create a well-functioning work place or house hold. Organising is unique to each individual their needs and wants in terms of having an organised life.
Are organisers glorified cleaners? The short answers is; no! Most organisers are highly educated and / or have a large list of work experience in human behaviour, paper-, time- and space management. Cleaning is part of organising but is mostly done by the client after we leave or by a cleaning company (who has their own set of credentials and specific industry experience). Once you are organised cleaning does become allot easier (as there is less stuff to move ).
So there you have it Professional Organising is a fantastic profession to be in and an industry that will grow significantly in the coming few years.
Professional Organisers want to help
At the heart most professional organisers want to help people with their skills and abilities. I do most of my work online through books and online courses.
