Declutter Your Kitchen: A Guide to Functionality and Organisation

The kitchen is one of the densest areas in the house and place we tend to spend some extra time in winter, this makes it a great place to organise now. Two things that are very important with any project but especially in the kitchen is a focus on; decluttering and functionality.

Decluttering your kitchen

Start with looking at the things you don’t need. There are often appliances that might have been used once or seemed like a great idea at the time – decluttering tends to be easier in the kitchen as there is little emotional attachment to items that live there.

The functionality in your kitchen

Functionality is also very important. Ask yourself; is this the best spot for this particular item in terms of the flow of the kitchen? The flow of a kitchen is determined on where the fridge, sink, dishwasher are in relation to one another.

Organising your kitchen

Once this is established you can go into some more nitty gritty and pick a few things to organise very well to such an extent that you smile every time you see it. For example I think it looks great to have some baskets in your drawers – when doing this make sure they are all the same colour, look and feel.

Another thing that makes your kitchen look great is organising your spices. This is a job to do over a couple of evenings; check the number of spices, get the right containers that fit the space.  It is amazing how spices tend to double or triple if you cannot see them. In my old house, one of the party tricks to show guest was my amazing spice drawer you could find anything in a second.  It had a label at the front and at the top and all bottles were the same. I think I bought 30 bottles from the cheap shop and it saved me hours when cooking.
