How to dispose of your clutter

Once you start decluttering you will not only be faced with questions as to what to dispose of and what to keep, but also how to dispose of items. If you have batteries, cartridges, paint, phones, paper and general waste, it is a maze to find where to go and how to dispose of your items.

In practical terms, you can get started by having a spot in your house preferably near the exit that has boxes where you collate waste in an appropriate manner. Once your boxes are starting to fill up it might be time to venture out.

I talk about disposing clutter

In my book Organising Unpacked. It is a great way to get started with organising your Life.

Here are some places where you can go to dispose of particular goods:

  • Batteries; Aldi has drop off points in all of their shops.

  • Chemical waste; there are bi-annual chemical drop off points across most regions, council can inform you about when and where they are run.

  • Cartridges; there are a number of places where they can refill them. Most offices, as well as the Office works chain have recycle stations on site.

  • Paper; this can be disposed of for free at the dump but can also be shredded securely by a number of companies which are relatively easy to find online.

  • Old mobile phones; new phones are coming nowadays with a plastic envelope. You can send your old phone at no cost to a company that will recycle it for you.

Most other items can be picked up by a council pick up or disposed of via a trip to the dump. I recently had to take such a trip and have to say the help and customer service is second to none. The majority of items can be disposed of for free, for general waste that cannot be recycled you pay a small fee. It is a bit of extra effort but we all hold the key to a less cluttered and more environmentally sound society for the future, let’s take it seriously and declutter responsibly.
