How to stay organised as an artist with your creative spaces?

In this article, let’s help those artists amongst you with their- creative spaces. Recently I was approached by an artist who was struggling with her creative items. As a very creative person, you might not want to go for the sterile organised environment. But organising can help with containing the art items and making your hobby even more enjoyable.

Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when organising creative spaces

  • Firstly I would suggest you group similar items together. These are similar items or groupings that make sense to you.

  • Once we know volume of these groupings, you can look at storage bins.

  • For most ‘creatives’ I would suggest they go for open boxes. For example open plastic boxes could be for some of your paints, open canvas boxes could be for your knitting and the list goes one.

  • Us large art folders to store your oversized art work.

  • With most creative endeavours you'll find that you have a range of different shapes and sizes which for organising purposes means that you will need to go back and forth to the shops to find the right organising tool for one particular group of items.

There are also a few things not to do when organising your creative spaces

  • Don't buy storage bins before you have categorised your items.

  • Don't expect it to be a days’ worth of work. It very likely will take a number of organising sessions to get the space and the items how you would like it to be.

Before you start don’t forget the overall aim, which most likely will be, to have your spaces set up in such a way, that you are inspired to start your creative endeavours. You'll then use your organising disciplines to put the things back prior to wrapping up your art session. Once you are there, well you are an organised creative and really the sky is the limit then - good luck.
